the 10 hiking essentials
To ensure you are prepared for all scenarios that may arise, Grouse Mountain recommends that you bring the following essential items with you whenever you hike on a mountain trail.
1) Light
Flashlight or a headlamp with extra batteries (and light bulb if not LED). Green Cyalume stick or small turtle lights as emergency backup.
2) Signaling Device
Whistle, Bear Bangers, Pencil Flare
3) Fire Starter
Matches (waterproof or in plastic bag) or lighter. A commercial fire starter and/or candle are also recommended.
4) Extra Clothes
Hat/toque, gloves, fleece jacket, Gore-tex jacket, polypropylene underwear, good quality hiking socks and Gore-tex over pants.
5) Pocket Knife
Multi-tool or a good pocket knife is recommended.
6) Shelter
Large orange plastic bag and thermal tarp.
7) Water and Food
High energy food bars and/or light snacks along with water, to keep you energized and hydrated.
8) First Aid Kit
Should include pocket mask, Sam Splint, bulk dressings, protective gloves, bandages, scissors and blister dressings.
9) Navigation
Good quality compass and maps. A GPS unit is also recommended.
10) Cell Phone
Ensure your battery is fully charged and protected from the elements.
