A record year for Seek The Peak’s 10th anniversary
Race winners and fundraisers tackle the course and breast cancer

Undaunted by 4,100 feet of elevation gain and 16 kilometres from Ambleside to the peak of Grouse Mountain, a record 804 racers conquered hills and fought against breast cancer today as part of the 2013 Seek The Peak presented by Columbia.
Racers endured the challenging and scenic uphill trek, all to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation.
This year’s Seek The Peak winner is Shaun Stephens-Whale with a time of 1:25:38.
Other winners are:
Top Relay Team: Capilano Eagles with a time of 1:30:07.
Top Solo Female: Kim Magnus with a time of 1:37:36.
As the crowds gathered to celebrate under spectacular sunny skies in the Grouse Mountain alpine plaza, one racer Terry Byrne – wearing bib #1054 – was inspired to approach the BC Cancer Foundation tent and make an on-the-spot donation of $2,108, double his bib number. This was on top of his initial donation of $1,000. Mr. Byrne is a long-time supporter of Grouse Mountain charity events and an avid Grouse Grinder.
“We are so grateful, and next year we will ensure Mr. Byrne has a higher bib number,” teased Grouse Mountain President Stuart McLaughlin.
The top fundraising team – adorned in pink and black tops and pink stripped knee socks – is the uber-stylish Booby Traps, raising a total of $8,465.
Grouse Mountain has raised more than $275,000 through Seek The Peak to support the fight against breast cancer, and this year’s success brings that total to more than $315,000.
"Thanks to today’s participants of Seek The Peak, more than $40,000 this year will go towards enabling researchers at the BC Cancer Agency to reach new heights of discovery that will directly impact breast cancer patients in British Columbia," said Erik Dierks, VP Development for the BC Cancer Foundation.
New for Seek The Peak 2013, Grouse Mountain introduced a “donate a dollar to BC Cancer Foundation” campaign at each on-mountain point-of-purchase, so these transactions will push that total up. Donations are also still being accepted online at seekthepeak.ca.
“We are all inspired once again today, by everyone from the family of four tackling the course to honour the memory of the mom’s sister to the elite athletes pushing their way to the top,” added McLaughlin.
“On behalf of Grouse Mountain, I would like to thank all our volunteers, racers and organizers for their passion and collective will to test fitness and fight cancer.”
