Supporting Orphaned Grizzly Cub Rewilding

(North Vancouver) Bear-y exciting news – Grouse Mountain’s resident Grizzly bears are turning 22! To celebrate,
Grinder and Coola are hosting a Bear-thday Fun-draiser on Saturday, July 29th, in support of the Grizzly Bear
Foundation’s orphaned Grizzly bear cub rewilding research – Project Rewild.
Arriving at the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife in September 2001, Grinder and Coola are
important ambassadors for the conservation and welfare of Grizzly bears. Orphaned as cubs, Grouse Mountain
offered the bears a 5.5-acre natural habitat and a second chance at life at a time when there was no rehabilitation
and release program for Grizzly bears in British Columbia.
In the time that Grinder and Coola have been at Grouse Mountain, the Wildlife Team has been able to watch them
learn and grow, observations that have helped determine what is known instinctually and what is learned behaviour
from their mothers. This important information is gathered to help future orphaned cubs.
“We are excited to partner with Grouse Mountain Resort again this year as we celebrate Coola and Grinder and the
role they play as ambassadors for Grizzly bear welfare and conservation,” said Nicholas Scapillati, Grizzly Bear
Foundation Executive Director. “Together, they have inspired and educated people across the globe to care about
Grizzly bears and the challenges they face. And by raising funds and awareness for Project Rewild, their Bear-thday
Party is helping make a difference for orphaned Grizzly cub rewilding efforts across British Columbia and beyond.”
Everyone is welcome to join the fun-filled celebration, which will feature exclusive Bear-thday activities and
educational programs, to raise awareness and support for Grinder and Coola’s wild cousins. Guests are invited to
watch the Grizzly Bear-thday Cake Smash, sign a giant Bear-thday Card for Grinder and Coola and enjoy
storytelling from Squamish Elder, William “Kwel-A-A-Nexw” Nahanee.
A portion of proceeds from Mountain Admission tickets, Grouse Grind® Skyride Download tickets and Bear-thday
merchandise on July 29th, 2023, will benefit the Grizzly Bear Foundation’s Project Rewild. Project Rewild is
innovative and world-leading research providing the science and best practices needed to inform and enhance
