January 18, 2013
January 18, 2013. North Vancouver, B.C. – Grouse Mountain is pleased to announce the arrival of a brand new Avalanche Skills Training Course taking place throughout February and March at the Peak of Vancouver. Whether it is planning a simple day snowshoe trek or a more extensive weekend excursion this latest course is a great launching pad for avalanche education.
Grouse Mountain’s qualified team during the two day course aims to help provide a foundation education for those recreationists with basic training and/or little experience following curriculum and guidance from the Canadian Avalanche Center. Avalanche Skills Training Course Level 1 is aimed at those interested in understanding and evaluating avalanche conditions, planning, analyzing public avalanche bulletins and is appropriate for winter recreationists of all levels – snowshoers, skiers, snowboarders and winter enthusiasts alike.
All of the two day courses take place from 9am to 4pm and include both indoor classroom and outdoor field time at the Peak of Vancouver providing entry-level decision making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. At the end of the course participants will know: the basics of avalanche formation and release, how to identify avalanche terrain; the steps required to plan and carry out a trip; how to use the Avaluator as a decision making tool; appropriate travel techniques for avalanche terrain plus how to carry out companion rescue.
This announcement from Grouse Mountain also co-insides with Avalanche Awareness Days taking place this weekend, January 19 and 20, which is a national celebration of Canada’s avalanche safety and expertise. Grouse Mountain’s Ski Patrol will be on-hand all Saturday and Sunday at the Peak of Vancouver providing complimentary interpreting avalanche sessions in the Theatre in the Sky as well as on-snow transceiver demos taking place outside the Chalet from 10am to 3pm.
