The 9th Annual Seek The Peak Results Are In!
Hundreds Come Together For This Unique North Shore Relay In Support Of Rethink Breast Cancer

June 17th, 2012. Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver, B.C. – This morning, alongside the beach and skyline of Downtown Vancouver over 525 participants, gathered at the Ambleside Park start line to tackle breast cancer and a 16 kilometer race to the Peak of Grouse Mountain. Over 35 relay teams and 383 individuals endured a fun but challenging 4,100 feet of elevation gain and uphill trek in an effort to raise valuable funds for Rethink Breast Cancer. This year’s Seek the Peak winner was seasoned course veteran Colin Dignum with a time of 1:28:11. The course record set by Simon Driver of 1:24:08 still stands.
Among the participants today were the friends and family of North Vancouver resident Kim Tempest, an avid Seek The Peaker, who passed away from advanced breast cancer just before Christmas. Rethink created The Kim Tempest Top Fundraiser Award this year to honour Kim whose passion for the cause and enthusiasm for Seek The Peak was both legendary and inspiring. Over the past few years Kim help raise thousands of dollars in pledges for Rethink and their programs which help and support young women with breast cancer. Kim’s story also inspired TELUS to match the top fundraiser’s amount this year to a maximum of $5000. The Kim Tempest Top Fundraiser Award fittingly went to Kim's husband Dave Mallinson this year who raised over $10,000 for Rethink Breast Cancer.
Kim’s husband Dave and her 14 year old daughter Arden lead the fitting tribute today to a woman who left a mark on so many people and lives in North Vancouver. “Rethink rang true for Kim and she was surprised by how many young women like herself were being diagnosed with breast cancer. We made lots of great friends through Rethink's programs with many of those people still play a very important role in my life”, said Dave Mallinson Kim’s husband. “Kim was an extrovert, she embraced life and fought her nine-year battle with breast cancer with humour and her huge, warm personality. She was a very unique human-being, she was a cheerleader and she left a lasting impression with all of those who met her”.
Grouse Mountain and Rethink Breast Cancer have raised over $275,000 through Seek The Peak the past 9 years. “At Seek The Peak we see some of our local elite athletes taking part in the race alongside groups of friends coming together in support of a great cause or in honour of friends who are battling breast cancer”, explains Grouse Mountain’s General Manager Michael Cameron. “The motivation of improving the lives of cancer sufferers propels participants up the Mountain and the friendly camaraderie of this event is unrivaled on the North Shore”.
Grouse Mountain and Rethink would like to thank all the volunteers, racers and organizers who are an passionate group of individuals bound together with the shared goal to eliminate breast cancer. The challenging 16km course starts at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, winds its way through North Vancouver, and then heads up the legendary Grouse Grind to the Peak of Vancouver. The valuable funds raised by Seek The Peakers this year will help Rethink expand their support programs to help young women dealing with breast cancer and enable them to invest in several promising young researchers in British Columbia.
