(North Vancouver) This morning atop Grouse Mountain, a crowd of enthusiastic snowshoers filled the starting gate for the 6th Annual Snowshoe Grind Mountain Run. Last week’s snowfall provided excellent conditions on the 5 kilometer route that includes the Snowshoe Grind trail.

“We were thrilled to welcome participants to Grouse Mountain this morning for another exciting Snowshoe Grind Mountain Run,” said Grouse Mountain spokesperson Julia Grant. “It was wonderful to see snowshoers across a wide range of ages and abilities taking part in this fast growing winter sport and enjoying themselves out on the trail.”

Participants ranged in age from 3 and a half to over 70 and included everyone from those out for a brisk walk to elite runners. Everyone was in great spirits and the atmosphere was incredibly fun with every racer greeted by friendly cheers as they crossed the finish line.

The 2016 Snowshoe Grind Mountain Run saw some exceptional athletic performances. Ian Robertson took top honours with a speedy time of 29:27. Ian was followed closely by Curtis Jung at 29:39 and Josh Tanner came in third with a time of 30:54. In the women's category, Allison Tai took top spot with a swift time of 35:00. Erin Ready and Andrea Taylor rounded out the women’s group with times of 37:30 and 37:42 respectively.

The Snowshoe Grind Mountain Run is the only snowshoe race of its kind in Vancouver and it is easy to see why snowshoeing has become such a fast growing winter sport. The Snowshoe Grind course offers an escape into the serene beauty of a natural winter playground that begins steps away from the Grouse Mountain Chalet. It then journeys through snow-topped trees to Dam Mountain on a challenging alpine trail before looping back to the Chalet.
